Yale Law School is a full participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, an additional scholarship designed to help eligible veterans pay for college, graduate or professional education. Veterans who are 100% eligible for the post-9/11 GI bill (Chapter 33), 100% of tuition and fees (including mandatory health care costs) are covered by a combination of Chapter 33 benefits, the federal Yellow Ribbon grant, and a matching contribution from Yale Law School`s yellow ribbon. Eligibility may vary, so veterans should consult Veterans Affairs Canada to determine eligibility. Beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year, Yale Law School will award full scholarships to eligible Young Women students with significant financial need under the Soledad `92 and Robert Horizon Scholarship Program. The Horizon Scholarship Program builds on the law school`s strong financial aid offerings by providing significant additional support to students who need it most. These scholarships will enable JD students with the highest needs to fully immerse themselves in the rich academic experience and benefit from the resources and opportunities that Yale Law School has to offer. “These students are brilliant – our school and our world need their skills, ambition and perspectives,” Gerken said in the announcement. “We are committed to opening our doors to the students who can benefit most from this school and give the most to the world, regardless of their means,” Gerken said. “I am very pleased that we will be able to make this exceptional addition to an already best-in-class financial assistance system. The Horizon Scholarship Program will free students who need it most from financial worries during law school and open up a world of possibilities so they can be a powerful force for change in society.

“When I entered law school, I struggled to choose between entering the private sector and helping my family financially or going into the public sector and helping families like mine through political change,” Horizon recipient Alphonse Simon LAW `24 wrote in an email to The News. And I feel much more autonomous in choosing the direction of my legal career. The application process for financial aid differs for both newly admitted and postgraduate students, as well as for students seeking loan support only, compared to those seeking a full package of loans and bursaries. The Faculty of Law does not award scholarships based on merit or criteria. The maximum possible grant is the amount of tuition fees (exceptions apply). The same needs-based calculation applies to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international students, who are similarly selected for eligibility for institutional scholarships. Fellows received $70,000 from the Faculty of Law in the 2022-2023 academic year, with recipients spread over their first, second and third years. The scholarship will continue to be awarded to first-year students in the future. Yale Law School is one of only two law schools in the country to provide assistance solely on a financial basis, and 73% of students received scholarships in the 2020-2021 academic year. Through these extensive financial aid programs, Yale law students graduate with the lowest debt burden of any even-numbered school. The Horizon Scholarship Program builds on these comprehensive financial support offerings to adapt to the changing needs of students. In the class of 2024, more than a quarter of students are the first in their family to attend an advanced or vocational school, and about one in six is the first in their family to graduate from university. “The Horizon Scholarship Program reflects the law school`s ongoing commitment to increasing support for our most needy students,” Miriam Ingber, associate dean of admissions and financial aid, wrote in an email to News. Horizon builds on an already strong financial aid system within Yale Law School. YLS has the lowest debt burden among comparable institutions. In the 2021-2022 school year, 76% of the student body received some form of support from the school. The Soledad `92 and Robert Horizon Scholarship Program offers full scholarships to students from economically disadvantaged families. The scholarships allow recipients to fully participate in all Yale law experiences while enabling them to build the career of their choice. A $1 million donation supports one student every three years at Yale Law School. Accepted students who meet the financial requirements automatically receive the scholarship. The program builds on the previously announced Horizon Grant program, which provided eligible students with $4,000 per year in addition to their pre-determined financial assistance. For scholarship students, the median amount is about $31,120, and 79% receive about $20,000 or more. The under-representation of marginalized groups afflicts the legal profession today; A 2021 study shows that less than 15 percent of lawyers are people of color, a phenomenon caused by law schools` inaccessibility to low-income students. Yale`s 2025 law class included 55 percent black students and 16 percent first-generation students. Law schools and graduate schools in general have historically focused on merit-based scholarships rather than need-based financial aid. Yale is one of only two law schools in the country to offer financial aid based solely on the needs of admitted students.
